Please review the web calendar for upcoming spring events.

June 12, 2013 will be a Release Time Day.
June 27th is the last day of school (1/2 day).

Introduction:

You are part owner of the Dartmouth High School Library! This webquest will acquaint you with your new property!

Task:
You will learn how to use the Library to enhance your academic, personal, and civic lives. The Library can help you in your quest to be the best version of yourself! ... no kidding! Now that you are a high school freshman/woman, you are no longer a student: you are a SCHOLAR! You are no longer a kid: you are a YOUNG ADULT! You are no longer a searcher: you are a RESEARCHER!

DHS Library Webquest

1. Log into schoolfusion using your username and password. See Mrs.  Mitchell or Miss King in the library if you need yours.  Select  Research Databases  : first, check out the Facts On File collection of databases . Then take a look at the 50+ databases in InfoTrac. Databases are premium areas of the web that DHS subscribes to. They are designed for reference and research purposes but contain all sorts of useful information.  Try to look at as many databases and eBooks as you can during this session. Get to know each one and its unique assets.  Check out features like emailing articles to yourself or obtaining citations for your research paper's Works Cited page. Be sure to write some notes on each of these resources, because you will be required to do a "quick write" before you exit the Library during this block.
See below!

2. Select MassCat and log in using
your username and password -- without the zeros.
password.  See Mrs.  Mitchell or Miss King in the library if you need yours.

Look around! This is the card catalog for the DHS Library! Search for a favorite title, author, or subject of interest.  MassCat also gives you access to libraries all over the Commonwealth with book delivery three times each week! It is like SAILS but for schools! If we don't have a title available but another library does [select Advanced Search and All Libraries], you can select Place Hold, and the book[s] will be sent to DHS! Awesome!  While you're at it, please update your record by adding your current email address in the "My Personal Details" section of your MassCat account [if it is not already there]. The DHS Library is going "green" and paperless, so all of our communications are done via email and schoolfusion messaging. Help us save some trees!

3. Link to EasyBib.com in order to create your Premium Edition account!
Remember, you can log into your account from anywhere in the world, but you must register for an account on campus.
The Premium Edition allows for note-taking, outlining,  bibliography storage and even generates parentheticals and facilitates paraphrasing. It is, quite simply, THE BOMB! Try it today. Most of you know how to use EasyBib to create bibliographies/works cited pages and generate parentheticals [so easy now!].

  4. Your ticket to leave:
Before you leave the Library, either message me through your  schoolfusion Message Center or open up your email service and send me -- ldmitchell@dartmouthps.org -- a one-paragraph [or more] overview of
what you have learned today. Complete the following:
  • I learned that I ...
  • I was surprised that I ...
  • I discovered that I ...

When you have more time at home or in school, please check out the following ... soooo gooood!

1. Do you know how books in our library are organized?  If not, link to the Library Labyrinth. This is a colorful tutorial with an explanation of the Dewey Decimal System! Enjoy!

  2. Also,  go to Useful Links. There are links for every one of your academic and civic needs. Explore and pay special attention to the RESEARCH AND WRITING section. ... good stuff! Also, the top section offers links to some amazing SEARCH ENGINES that offer you more scholarly results. Check them out! There's more to the web than Google!
