January 11, 2017
Dear Parents, Guardians, Faculty, and Staff:
After a long and difficult decision making process, I tendered my resignation effective July 1, 2017. At this point in my life, it is important that I spend time with my family. To do this, requires that I find a position closer to home. It has been a pleasure to serve the Dartmouth High School community, and I will continue to serve with enthusiasm and dedication. I am grateful for the opportunities and experiences that I have shared with the faculty, staff, students, and community members of Dartmouth. I will cherish my time here as I move to the next phase of my career in education.
I would like to congratulate the Dartmouth DECA Organization on its performance in the DECA District 1 Career Development Conference and Competition last weekend in Quincy. A special congratulations to the following students for placing at districts and moving on to the state competition in March: Taylor Alves, 8th place in Apparel and Accessories Marketing; Hannah Carvalho, 7th place in Principles of Marketing; Olivia Marques and Samantha Santos, 7th place in Travel and Tourism Marketing Team; Adam Rutch, 5th place in Quick Serve Restaurant Management; Kyle Noseworthy, 4th place in Principles of Hospitality and Tourism; Liam Caulfield and Valentino Aiello, 3rd place in Business Law and Ethics; Cole Jacobsen, 3rd place in Hotel and Lodging Management; Tony Root, 1st place in Human Resources Management; Kenny Maxfield, 1st place Personal Financial Literacy. Thank you to advisors, Mrs. Kane and Mr. Charest accompanied by retiree Business Department Chairperson, Mrs. McDonald for working with our students as they exhibited their expertise beyond the classroom walls!
Our DHS Advanced Placement Digital Photography class opened “Never Lose Focus!” last night at the Russells Mills Schoolhouse. We were thrilled to see over 100 people out to support our students’ work. If you were unable to attend last night, additional hours for tonight, January 11 are from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM. Calendars for the New Year which showcase AP Digital Photography students’ work are available for $10.00. Please see Unified Arts Lead Teacher, Mrs. Judy Cronin or an AP Digital Photography student if interested.
We are so proud of Senior Nathan Jones for his commendable performance at the Mass. State Forensic and Debate Team tournament in Lincoln-Sudbury HS on Saturday, December 10th. Nathan received two First Place finishes in his respective rounds, out of 3 rounds. Nate competed in the Group Discussion category against 4 or 5 other students from top Boston-area schools, and garnered 1st place twice. The Group Discussion topic was the chaos in the Middle East. Students are evaluated on the depth of their knowledge; their promulgation of ideas; and offering of solutions. The Group Discussion format consists of 2 min. introductory remarks; two 15 minute discussion periods; and 2 minute closing remarks.
DHS Librarian, Amanda Lawrence wrote an article that was published in the School Library Journal on January 10, 2017 entitled “Snapchatting ‘The Odyssey’: An Epic Success”. The article provides readers with an authentic account of Miss Lawrence’s partnership with English teacher, Mrs. Brittingham as they experimented with Snapchat to engage a diverse student body with the demanding text The Odyssey by Homer.
